FIFA World Cup: Cheers to Lionel Messi for a Final Touch of Brilliance

The Final Act of Messi: A Journey Through Emotions

As I prepared for the FIFA World Cup final on Sunday, it felt like gearing up for a spectacular show. The atmosphere at MetLife Stadium was electric, almost magical. When Lionel Messi stepped onto the field, it was like waiting for a magician to perform one final trick—could he make history?

Many fans, even those who weren’t rooting for Argentina, were eager to see if the 39-year-old could accomplish what seemed almost destined for him. However, just like the famous documentary “Breaking the Magician’s Code” showed, Spain managed to take away the illusion, leaving Messi looking heartbroken as they took home the trophy.

For me, it was a moment filled with real disappointment. Years ago, my allegiance to Manchester United meant I was a Cristiano Ronaldo fan. After all, Messi had given my team a few tough nights during their Champions League encounters with Barcelona. Yet, on that night, despite needing to wake up early for work, I found myself awake at 4 am, scrolling through social media, anxious for news—wondering if this was the end of his international career.

Embracing Messi Without Bias

It wasn’t until the 2022 World Cup that I began to appreciate Messi beyond rivalries. By then, he had left Barcelona and was trying to find his place at PSG. His journey began with a disappointing loss to Saudi Arabia, reigniting doubts about whether his international career could ever match legends like Pele or Maradona.

But then, as always, Messi found a way to dazzle. He carried Argentina on his shoulders, pushing them through the knockout stages. In what many consider the greatest World Cup final, he was challenged by Kylian Mbappe and France. But just when Argentina needed a miracle, Messi delivered with two stunning goals, finally achieving his long-sought dream of lifting the World Cup.

As Peter Drury famously remarked that night in Qatar, Messi finally seemed to touch paradise.

The Road to 2026

Fast forward to 2026, and questions about his ability lingered. After moving to Miami, Messi became the biggest draw in MLS, a league often viewed as a resting ground for older stars. Yet, he had something to prove again. In a key match against Algeria, he scored a hat-trick, reminding everyone, including himself, of his magic.

Before long, he broke the record for the most goals in World Cup history, uniting Argentina once more with a common goal: to make their hero a champion again.

“We know Messi is 39 years old, but he still plays like a champion,” said an emotional Giuliano Simeone after their semi-final win against England. The team rallied around him, celebrating not just the possibility of lifting the trophy but cherishing the magic Messi brought to their journey.

The Heart of a Superhero

Watching Messi play is like watching a superhero in action. Yet, like the latest version of Superman, there’s a relatable side to him. He has always been that shy boy from Rosario, and over the last two World Cups, he reminded us that he is, indeed, human. Whether it was his fiery reactions on the pitch or moments filled with tears of joy, he showed vulnerability.

After a nail-biting match against Egypt, where he nearly cried, the final against Spain was another harsh reality. Messi could not carry the team alone, and Spain’s victory served as a sobering reminder of those pressures.

Leaving a Lasting Legacy

No matter your opinion on him, Messi’s two recent World Cup journeys illustrate why many consider him the greatest of all time. His on-field brilliance and ability to inspire his teammates are unmatched.

Lionel Scaloni, Argentina’s coach, voiced what many felt: “There are no longer any doubts that he is the greatest footballer in history.” Messi’s greatness extends beyond his skill; it lies in his capacity to unite and uplift those around him, fostering a belief even in difficult times.

As the final whistle blew, and Messi stood there in tears, fans and rivals alike felt a sense of gratitude—not just for the game but for the countless moments of magic he had gifted us all.

As my work shift ended on Monday, one thought remained clear: cherish the career of Lionel Messi. Whether he retires soon or continues to play, it feels like we’re witnessing the final chapter of his enchanting story.

All I could think to say was, “Thank you, Messi, for that final act of magic.”
