India vs England: Rohit Sharma’s Stunning Century at Lord’s Silences Retirement Rumors, Claims Saba Karim

Rohit Sharma Silences Retirement Talks with Stunning Knock at Lord’s

Former Indian wicketkeeper Saba Karim has shared his thoughts on Rohit Sharma’s remarkable century at Lord’s, suggesting that it may have put an end to ongoing retirement gossip surrounding the seasoned opener. This came after India’s 2-1 defeat in the ODI series against England.

Rohit entered the final ODI match under some pressure, having scored only 11 and 26 in the previous games. Speculation about his future grew louder with reports indicating that selectors were considering options beyond the 39-year-old player, especially with the 2027 ODI World Cup approaching.

Doubts about Rohit’s position were heightened during the second ODI in Cardiff. However, BCCI secretary Devajit Saikia addressed this by clarifying that there had been no discussions about it possibly being Rohit’s last international game.

In a game that many were watching closely, Rohit delivered a stunning performance, scoring a blistering 138 runs off 110 balls while chasing a target of 388. This achievement made him the first Indian, and also the oldest player, to score an ODI century at Lord’s. Despite India falling 27 runs short and losing the series, Rohit’s innings reignited conversations about his abilities.

Karim noted that Rohit’s performance, along with the promising form and leadership of Shubman Gill, provided some encouraging signs for the team despite the series loss. “India have ticked several boxes. Rohit’s century has settled all doubts about him. Shubman Gill played positively and showed great leadership, so I don’t see significant issues with the batting. The focus now should be on finding the right fast-bowling lineup if Jasprit Bumrah is not available,” Karim said during an interview on JioHotstar’s Match Centre Live.

India’s bowling struggled in Bumrah’s absence, leading to England scoring a formidable 387 runs. Prasidh Krishna took 2 wickets for 69 runs, while Arshdeep Singh ended with none for 72. Prince Yadav managed one wicket but gave away 79 runs, and Gurnoor Brar went wicketless, conceding 97 runs in his 10 overs.

Looking ahead, Karim emphasized that India’s upcoming ODI series in New Zealand will be crucial for testing the team’s bowling combinations before the World Cup. “In these conditions, our young, inexperienced bowlers had a tough time. The five-match ODI tour to New Zealand will be vital to assess these combinations. A wrist spinner who can take wickets during middle overs is essential, whether that’s Kuldeep Yadav or someone else. India needs to plan carefully considering the opposition, conditions, and venue dimensions, ensuring they take the right resources and combinations to the field,” Karim added.

With Rohit having retired from Test and T20I cricket, he is now focusing solely on ODIs.
