Rohit Sharma Keeps It Low-Key: Lets His Lord’s Century Speak in 3rd ODI Against England

Rohit Sharma Shines in Third ODI Amid Retirement Rumors

On Sunday at Lord’s, Rohit Sharma silenced speculation about his retirement with a stunning century, leading India in a challenging target of 388 runs against England in the deciding ODI of the series.

For several days, discussions had shifted from his batting to his future in the game. Some reports suggested that this might be his last ODI, especially given his recent struggles at the crease. But Rohit took a bold stance—he let his bat do the talking. His impressive performance reminded everyone why he is considered one of India’s best batsmen in the format.

The moment was special, but Rohit kept his celebration low-key. Instead of shouting or jumping, he simply acknowledged the crowd with a raised bat before focusing on the task ahead. While reaching his century was a milestone, he knew there was much more at stake in the match.

As he completed his hundred, the environment at Lord’s buzzed with applause. His teammates in the dressing room stood in appreciation, and head coach Gautam Gambhir applauded from the balcony. Virat Kohli, a long-time friend and teammate, hugged him, but Rohit’s demeanor remained calm and composed.

Leading up to this match, much of the talk had centered around whether he would be playing his final ODI at this historic venue. The attention on his performance added pressure, but Rohit never allowed it to affect him. He chose to respond through his gameplay.

The innings began cautiously as England’s bowlers posed questions with their new ball. Rohit was patient, leaving deliveries outside off stump while ensuring his wickets remained intact alongside partner Shubman Gill. They built a strong opening partnership that set a solid foundation for the chase.

Gradually, as the ball softened, Rohit showcased his classic style—impressive pull shots, elegant drives, and well-timed lofted shots. Boundaries began to flow, and India’s hopes of a successful chase brightened. Even when Gill was dismissed, Rohit continued to score freely, finding gaps and keeping the scoreboard ticking.

The highlight of the innings came when he faced Adil Rashid. Rohit executed a slog sweep that sailed over deep midwicket for a six, marking his 34th ODI century, achieved in just 84 balls. The crowd erupted in cheers, and his teammates celebrated his achievement enthusiastically.

Even after reaching this significant milestone, Rohit maintained his focus. There were no loud celebrations or attempts to bask in the limelight; he simply raised his bat, shared a moment with Kohli, and returned to the game.

This century was particularly historic. Rohit became the first Indian player to score an ODI century at Lord’s, surpassing Sourav Ganguly’s previous best score of 90 at the venue. At 39 years and 80 days, he became the oldest batter to achieve this feat at Lord’s and the oldest Indian to score an international century across formats.

His legacy in ODIs is impressive. With this century, Rohit achieved his eighth ODI hundred in England—the highest by any visiting player in a single country, outdoing legends like Sachin Tendulkar and AB de Villiers.

While it remains to be seen whether this match marks Rohit’s final ODI appearance, the focus on Sunday was purely on his exceptional batting. At a venue that has witnessed many cricketing legends, Rohit added another remarkable chapter to his career—a beautiful reminder of his talent and dedication on the field.
