Aamir Khan Clarifies Misconception About 3 Idiots Character
Actor Aamir Khan recently addressed the common belief that his character Phunsukh Wangdu from the film 3 Idiots was inspired by Sonam Wangchuk, a renowned engineer and education reformer from Ladakh. Speaking at a Q&A session at the British Film Institute in London, Aamir clarified that this idea is simply not true. He assured the audience that neither he nor the film’s writers were aware of Wangchuk during the film’s production.
Aamir described the connection as a “misconception,” stating, “I didn’t know about Mr. Sonam when we were making 3 Idiots. I saw a recent video where Chatur mentioned it, but that’s incorrect. Neither Raju, Abhijat, nor I had any knowledge of Mr. Sonam at that time.”
Despite clearing the air on the inspiration behind his character, Aamir did express admiration for Wangchuk’s work in education and social reform. He emphasized that the value of Wangchuk’s contributions stands on its own merits, irrespective of any similarities to his character.
During the same event, Aamir also shared his concerns regarding Sonam Wangchuk’s ongoing hunger strike in Delhi’s Jantar Mantar, where Wangchuk is advocating for statehood for Ladakh and constitutional protections. Aamir expressed, “We are all very concerned for his health and well-being. We hope this situation resolves positively and that he can end his fast soon.”
Wangchuk’s protest has garnered significant attention, as reports indicate he has been losing weight while highlighting his cause, leading to increased public and political interest.
Aamir Khan’s comments not only clarify misconceptions but also reflect his respect for social activism and the individuals who drive change.
