The release of The Odyssey is just around the corner, and the excitement is palpable. This buzz climbed even higher after the film’s director, Christopher Nolan, along with stars Tom Holland and Matt Damon, visited Mumbai. Anticipation for the film’s opening weekend has reached a new level, especially after advance ticket sales opened well ahead of time, on June 8.
Recent reports indicate that The Odyssey has sold around 125,000 tickets for its opening day alone, with 50,000 at PVR Inox and 12,000 at Cinepolis. Over the weekend, ticket sales are expected to reach nearly 250,000. PVR Inox even shared on social media that by Monday night, 120,000 tickets had already been sold.
In addition, an impressive 91,000 tickets have been sold for IMAX showings across 34 screens in India, leading to a gross of approximately Rs. 9.5 crores. Nolan’s films are known for their stunning IMAX experiences, and The Odyssey, which is uniquely filmed entirely with IMAX cameras, has caused a significant demand for this premium format.
Christopher Nolan’s last movie, Oppenheimer, set a high bar with 200,000 advance tickets sold, and The Odyssey aims to surpass that. While Oppenheimer opened with earnings of Rs. 14.45 crores, forecasts suggest that The Odyssey could open at around Rs. 17-18 crores. However, if advance sales continue to surge, a Rs. 20 crore opening could become a reality.
As for screen availability, The Odyssey is set to premiere in over 2,500 screens, compared to Oppenheimer’s 1,923 screens, indicating the high demand for this much-anticipated release.
July is shaping up to be a fantastic month for cinema, especially following the surprising success of Dhamaal 4. With the forward momentum surrounding The Odyssey and the upcoming Spider-Man: Brand New Day, it looks like the industry will end July on a high note.
