SAN FRANCISCO: A group of hundreds of economists has urged immediate action to address the potential impact of artificial intelligence (AI) on the economy and employment. This call came in an open letter released on July 13, signed by leading economists and tech experts from companies like Anthropic, Google, and OpenAI.

The letter highlights the possibility that AI could evolve significantly over the next decade. This transformation might be more impactful than the Industrial Revolution but could happen much faster. While the advancements in AI could lead to better living standards, there are also risks, including the potential loss of many jobs.

In just four sentences, the letter emphasizes the need for leaders to create the right incentives and guidelines to ensure AI benefits society and works alongside humans.

The initiative, organized by Stanford University’s digital economy lab, has already garnered over 200 signatures, including 16 Nobel Prize winners. Yoshua Bengio, a notable computer scientist and AI expert, also added his name to the list. He expressed concern about the future of the economy and stressed the importance of making informed choices rather than letting uncontrolled market dynamics take the lead, which could leave many behind.
