Brief
A tragic aviation incident has struck the Bahamas, involving a plane crash in North Andros that resulted in the loss of ten lives, alongside a separate aircraft fire on the same day. This prompted the local government to suspend operations for Flamingo Air and initiate a federal safety investigation.
On Friday at around 1 p.m., a Cessna 402 took off from Lynden Pindling International Airport in Nassau, headed for San Andros Airport. Unfortunately, the Aircraft Accident Investigation Authority (AAIA) reported that the plane encountered issues and crashed into thick bushes shortly before landing.
Insight
First responders, including police and medical teams, quickly arrived at the crash site to assist. The Bahamas Musicians and Entertainers Union confirmed that among the deceased were well-known members of the Da Pond Band, whose contributions significantly enriched Bahamian culture.
Prime Minister Philip Brave Davis expressed his condolences, stating that a sole survivor was rescued from the wreckage. He conveyed his thoughts and prayers for the grieving families and the survivor’s recovery.
Authorities have not disclosed the identities of those who perished in the crash. Initial reports from the AAIA suggested seven people were onboard, but officials are still clarifying the details.
Earlier on the same day, a separate Flamingo Air flight bound for Mayaguana had to return to Nassau due to a reported issue. After safely landing, passengers disembarked, but the aircraft then caught fire on the runway.
In response to these incidents, the Civil Aviation Authority Bahamas temporarily suspended Flamingo Air’s operating certificate as a precautionary measure. Current investigations by the AAIA and CAAB are underway to determine the cause of the crash.
