Trump Claims He Pushed for Review of US Player’s Ban, Rejects Influence Over FIFA in 2026 World Cup Context

Trump Defends Intervention in Balogun’s Red Card Controversy

President Donald Trump has voiced his support for striker Folarin Balogun, addressing his involvement in the player’s recent disciplinary case. Trump stated that he had requested FIFA President Gianni Infantino to reevaluate a red card given to Balogun, believing it wasn’t a justifiable sending-off.

His remarks come amid a heated debate after FIFA allowed Balogun to play in the World Cup Round of 16 against Belgium, reversing his earlier suspension. This incident has raised questions about football governance and the consistency of disciplinary actions during the tournament.

“I just asked for a review because I didn’t think it was a foul,” Trump told reporters in the Oval Office. He criticized the match official as a “horrible” referee, emphasizing that his request was solely for a reassessment and not an attempt to pressure FIFA.

“I think they made a brilliant decision,” he added, highlighting the importance of having top players in key matches to avoid any blemish on the World Cup’s reputation.

On his social media platform Truth Social, Trump expressed gratitude to FIFA for “doing what was right” and overturning what he termed a significant injustice.

The controversy originated from Balogun’s red card during the United States’ 2-0 victory over Bosnia and Herzegovina in the Round of 32. He was sent off for a serious foul play incident involving defender Tarik Muharemovic, who required medical attention after the challenge. This initially resulted in an automatic suspension under FIFA’s rules.

However, FIFA’s Disciplinary Committee later decided to suspend the ban’s enforcement for one year, allowing Balogun to be eligible for the crucial match against Belgium.

Governance Concerns Arise Over FIFA’s Decision

The FIFA ruling has sparked division in the football community, with Belgium expressing strong disapproval. The Royal Belgian Football Association stated it was “astonished” by FIFA’s decision, arguing that it contradicts their competition regulations calling for an automatic suspension following a red card.

Belgium’s officials highlighted tournament guidelines that suggest the ruling undermines consistency in how disciplinary actions are applied. They are considering their options in light of the decision, raising concerns about the integrity of the sport as the knockout stage approaches.

In contrast, the United States football community has welcomed the outcome, celebrating Balogun’s availability after he scored three goals in the tournament so far.

This situation has intensified scrutiny over FIFA’s disciplinary measures, especially the rarely used provisions that allow for the suspension or alteration of standard discipline in special situations. The debate also sheds light on potential outside influences in football governance, especially following Trump’s comments and reported discussions with FIFA officials. As the World Cup progresses, the implications of this ruling have raised questions about future disciplinary actions in major matches.
