India Aims to Address Public Concerns Over Ethanol-Blend Fuel Following ‘Experiment’ Comment

Government Faces Backlash Over E20 Fuel Mandate

India’s government is dealing with growing dissatisfaction surrounding the mandatory use of ethanol-blended petrol known as E20, which contains 20% ethanol. This policy, implemented last year, has stirred significant debate among motorists and has become a point of contention for Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s administration in one of the largest car markets in the world.

Tensions escalated this week after Attorney General R. Venkataramani referred to E20 as an “experiment” during a court hearing, suggesting that the results of its implementation would only be clear next year. Although the government later disputed this claim, recordings from the court session quickly spread on social media, fueling public frustration.

In response to the uproar, Venkataramani clarified that his comments referred specifically to ethanol supply volumes rather than the fuel policy itself. However, this explanation has done little to quell the criticism. Opponents argue that the government has rushed the rollout without proper consultation.

The government’s press office dismissed the backlash as “wild claims” and advised the public not to get swept up in the agitation. Petroleum Minister Hardeep Singh Puri tried to reassure consumers by pointing out that ethanol is also used in motor racing, which enhances vehicle acceleration. He acknowledged some potential decrease in mileage but emphasized the benefits.

Many motorists have voiced their frustrations over limited fuel options at petrol stations, linking E20 to reduced fuel efficiency and increased wear on vehicle components. A viral video featured a disgruntled car owner, Manish Kashyap, who complained about repairs needed after using E20 fuel, saying he spent significant money on his vehicle.

Political opposition has also taken note. Priyank Kharge, a minister from the opposition Congress party, criticized the government on X platform, claiming the E20 policy was rolled out without adequate public discussion and questioning the government’s accountability for potential damages.

Amidst the rising discontent, Tehseen Poonawalla, a prominent figure in New Delhi, announced a planned protest against the E20 policy, garnering interest from thousands.

The government defends the E20 mandate as a measure to reduce carbon emissions, decrease reliance on crude oil imports, and support farmers by boosting demand for crops used in ethanol production.
