Ayodhya, India – Every evening, 65-year-old Brajesh Kumar makes his way up three flights of stairs to the rooftop of his home, where he finds peace with a view of the Ram Temple in Ayodhya, northern India. Over the years, Kumar has watched his town transform from a quiet area into a hub of the Hindu nationalist movement, led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). The temple stands where the 16th-century Babri Mosque once was—a site that was demolished by a Hindu mob in 1992, resulting in riots that claimed nearly 2,000 lives, primarily among Muslims.
Two and a half years back, Modi led the inauguration of the new temple, which is dedicated to Lord Ram, a revered figure in Hinduism believed to have been born at this location. For devotees like Kumar, this temple symbolizes tranquility, despite the heavy history surrounding its construction.
However, recent events have shaken this sense of peace. Allegations have emerged that those in charge of the temple’s management may have misappropriated significant donations from worshippers, leading to accusations of corruption amounting to millions of dollars.
“We’ve been let down by the management, who have betrayed our trust,” Kumar expressed. “If left unchecked, they will exploit our faith and line their own pockets.”
The claims have sparked police investigations, arrests, and even political tension, creating a potential impact on upcoming elections in India’s most populous state.
Allegations of Mismanagement
Since its opening, the Ram Temple has become one of India’s top religious destinations, drawing millions of Hindu followers. It is managed by the Shri Ram Janmabhoomi Teerth Kshetra Trust, an independent entity with notable political connections, including ties to the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh, the guiding organization behind the BJP.
The corruption claims emerged after Mahipal Singh, a former accountant for the trust, publicly highlighted discrepancies in the financial records. The issue escalated when Akhilesh Yadav, a former chief minister from the opposition party, asserted that substantial funds were unaccounted for.
Under growing pressure, the BJP-led state government formed a three-member investigative team, which has initiated a criminal case. Eight individuals, including staff involved in counting donations, have already been arrested.
Devotees have also come forward, seeking answers about their donations, which include silver bricks and gold jewelry that they entrusted to the temple’s leaders. Recently, Champat Rai, the long-serving general secretary of the trust, resigned along with other prominent trustees amidst the ongoing scandal, further intensifying public dissatisfaction.
Voices of Concern
Santosh Dubey, who was involved in the 1992 Babri Mosque demolition, has voiced deep disappointment over the allegations, calling for severe consequences for those involved in the corruption. “These dishonest individuals running the temple create an atmosphere of fear,” Dubey lamented. “The pain caused by this corruption is indescribable.”
The situation poses a challenge for the BJP, especially as they have historically positioned themselves as protectors of Hindu interests. Observers suggest that if more religious leaders join the controversy, it could significantly hurt the party ahead of next year’s elections in Uttar Pradesh.
Political analyst Rasheed Kidwai warns that the BJP’s long-standing strategy of appealing to religious sentiments could backfire. “What has served them well in the past could now cause serious damage,” he stated.
As the uproar continues, many in Ayodhya feel betrayed, raising questions about integrity and transparency as the region prepares for pivotal political contests.
