Belfast, Northern Ireland – In a surprising turn of events, India faced a significant defeat against Ireland in their first men’s international cricket match on Friday. The young star, Vaibhav Sooryavanshi, was rested for this game, and India lost to Ireland for the very first time in their history.
Ireland chose to bat first in the T20 match at Stormont, recovering from a shaky start of 51 for 4 to finish with a competitive score of 182 for 9. In response, India struggled and was bowled out for 148, falling short by 34 runs. This match marked India’s first outing since clinching their second consecutive T20 World Cup title in March.
“We have a lot to learn from this match, and we won’t forget what happened,” stated India’s new captain Shreyas Iyer, reflecting on his first T20 match since 2023. “We’ll come back strong in the next game.”
India will have another chance to regroup as they face Ireland again on Sunday at the same venue before heading to England for a five-match series.
Sooryavanshi, the much-anticipated 15-year-old talent, made waves during the Indian Premier League but was not part of the playing XI, which retained seven members from the championship team. “Sooryavanshi is an amazing player, but we believe in our experienced lineup,” said Iyer. “He will have his opportunity soon.”
Two debutants from Ireland stole the spotlight during the match. Jai Moondra and Matt Hollard, who are both making their first appearances, took five wickets between them. Moondra made an immediate impact, bowling out opener Sanju Samson with his very first delivery and later taking the catch to dismiss Shivam Dube, India’s last recognized batter. He finished with impressive figures of 2 for 25.
On the other hand, Hollard made his mark by dismissing Ishan Kishan with his second ball and later taking the wicket of Shreyas Iyer, ending up with 3 for 28.
India lost three wickets quickly in the powerplay, but opener Abhishek Sharma managed to score 49 off just 20 balls before being caught in the deep. After him, Shivam Dube was the only player to make a significant contribution with 25 runs.
Ireland’s bowlers maintained pressure on the Indian batsmen, with Matthew Humphreys taking 3 for 28. He sprained his hand while attempting a difficult catch but returned to seal the victory by taking two more wickets towards the end.
“It’s really special to win against the world champions at home,” said Lorcan Tucker, who took on the captaincy due to injuries within the squad. “We faced tough moments but remained diligent throughout the match.”
During the powerplay, India’s Harshit Rana broke through with three wickets, putting Ireland under pressure. Ben Calitz welcomed Prasidh Krishna back to T20 cricket with two sixes before being dismissed. Axar Patel had chances to take crucial wickets but dropped both Tucker and Gareth Delany. Tucker reached 50 runs off 35 balls before getting out, while Delany ended up making a significant impact with 49 runs, hitting three sixes consecutively off Krishna.
Overall, it was a rollercoaster match, showcasing the promising talent of young cricketers and setting the stage for the upcoming second game.
