Ancy Sojan Breaks Long-Standing Long Jump Record

In a stunning display of athleticism, Ancy Sojan made history by breaking the women’s long jump national record at the National Inter-State Senior Athletics Championships on June 27. The young athlete from Kerala soared to an impressive leap of 6.88 meters, surpassing the previous record of 6.83 meters held by Anju Bobby George since the 2004 Athens Olympics.

This record-breaking jump not only ended Anju’s long-standing achievement but also marked a significant milestone in Indian athletics, particularly in field events. With this performance, Ancy has positioned herself among the elite in Asian athletics. Her jump ranks as the eighth-best in Asia’s history and makes her only the second woman in the continent to jump over 6.85 meters in the last 20 years, showcasing her talent on an international scale.

The reaction from the athletic community has been one of excitement. Many are celebrating Ancy’s achievement as a transformative moment in Indian sports.

Who Is Ancy Sojan?

Ancy Sojan is quickly becoming a prominent name in Indian athletics. Born on March 1, 2001, in Thrissur, Kerala, she proudly represents the Indian Navy as a Chief Petty Officer. Over recent years, Ancy has proved to be a strong contender in the women’s long jump.

Her career gained traction during the 2023 Asian Games in Hangzhou, where she won a silver medal with a jump of 6.63 meters. Ancy continued her success by securing another silver medal at the 2025 Asian Athletics Championships and a bronze at the 2026 Asian Indoor Athletics Championships, solidifying her status as a top athlete in the region.

Earlier this season, Ancy hinted at her potential by surpassing her personal best with a jump of 6.75 meters at the National Federation Cup. Her recent performance and record-breaking jump promise a bright future, especially with the World Athletics Championships approaching. Ancy’s success not only represents her achievements but also honors the legacy of Anju Bobby George, paving the way for a new generation in Indian women’s long jump.
