Germany Falls to Ecuador in World Cup Group Stage
Germany’s manager, Julian Nagelsmann, defended his players after their 2-1 loss to Ecuador, stating they didn’t lack effort. However, this sentiment was contradicted by team captain Joshua Kimmich and striker Deniz Undav, who expressed that Ecuador’s players showed more determination during the match.
Germany had already secured their spot in the next round after winning against Curacao and the Ivory Coast. They started strong in New Jersey, with Leroy Sane scoring just over a minute into the game. But Ecuador quickly equalized with a goal from Nilson Angulo, and Gonzalo Plata later scored the winning goal after halftime, allowing Ecuador to advance as one of the best third-placed teams in the tournament.
Since winning the World Cup in Brazil in 2014, Germany’s performance has been inconsistent, having as many losses as wins in their past three World Cup outings—totaling four wins against four losses.
The different viewpoints among the German squad became clear after the match. While Nagelsmann attributed the loss to tactical errors, Kimmich and Undav believed it was Ecuador’s desire that made the difference. Undav highlighted the intensity of Ecuador’s play, saying, “I felt they wanted it more than we did.” He noted their aggressive approach and insisted that Germany needed to match that level of commitment.
Kimmich echoed this sentiment, stating that Germany fell short because their opponents were more eager. He remarked, “The difference today was that the other team wanted to win more than us.”
In contrast, Nagelsmann dismissed the notion that a lack of effort was to blame. He argued that their tactics faltered after they took the lead. “We started strong, but unfortunately, we mismanaged our positioning afterward,” he explained. He acknowledged Ecuador’s urgency but maintained that all his players had given their best.
The conflicting opinions from Nagelsmann and his players sparked discussions about the team’s performance. As Germany prepares for the knockout stage, they are set to face one of the top eight third-placed teams at Boston Stadium on Monday.
