India’s aspiration to host the 2036 Olympic Games took a significant step forward on Wednesday. The International Olympic Committee (IOC) has approved updates to its selection process, which will determine the host nation by mid-2029.
During the IOC’s 146th Session in Lausanne, members discussed a new “Strategic Dialogue” phase. This stage will fit between the existing Continuous Dialogue and Targeted Dialogue phases, aiming to enhance transparency. It will require potential hosts to provide stronger financial and operational assurances earlier in the bidding cycle.
India made its official bid for the 2036 Games by submitting a Letter of Intent in 2024. The IOC’s recent decision offers clearer guidance for the upcoming stages, although it also means that candidates will face more scrutiny.
Over the next year, nations currently in the Continuous Dialogue phase will be evaluated. By March 2027, a shortlist of interested countries will be formed. Those selected will enter the Strategic Dialogue phase, where they must complete a Future Host Questionnaire and provide essential financial guarantees.
Kolinda Grabar-Kitarovic, chair of the Future Host Commission, explained that this new phase came about due to feedback from both IOC members and potential host nations. She emphasized that all parties were seeking greater clarity and transparency.
### Important Years Ahead
The Strategic Dialogue phase is poised to be a crucial point in the 2036 Games bidding. Candidate cities will be assessed based on their financial commitments, governance structures, cost control measures, and ability to meet infrastructure deadlines. The IOC will also conduct site visits to evaluate the proposals before final decisions are made.
India is seen as a strong contender for the 2036 Games, with Ahmedabad likely to be the focus of its bid. However, competition is expected from nations like Qatar, while Turkey and South Africa are also considering their own bids.
The final Targeted Dialogue phase will kick off in 2028, at which point preferred hosts will need to submit a full set of legal and financial guarantees before the IOC makes its final decision.
### Host Decision in 2029
As laid out in the timeline from the IOC Session, the Future Host Commission will offer its recommendations after the Targeted Dialogue stage. The IOC Executive Board will then designate the preferred hosts, whose names will be voted on in mid-2029.
This timeline indicates that India’s Olympic aspirations will be assessed over the next three years before a final decision is reached.
Previously, the host selection process was paused to allow for broader discussions with member nations. The addition of the Strategic Dialogue phase aims to tackle those concerns, ensuring that only bids with solid financial backing and realistic plans progress.
For India, this approval marks the beginning of what could be a pivotal journey towards hosting the Olympic Games for the very first time.
