First-Time Discovery of Lethal Parasitic Tapeworm in West Coast Wildlife

Rising Concerns About Ebola Outbreak in Africa

An unsettling Ebola outbreak is escalating in parts of Africa, catching the attention of health officials. Dr. Marc Siegel recently discussed the situation, noting that an American doctor has tested positive for the virus. This outbreak raises worries not only about Ebola but also about the challenges associated with Hantavirus quarantine.

First Detection of “Fox Tapeworm” in West Coast Wildlife

In another significant health news, a parasitic tapeworm called Echinococcus multilocularis, often referred to as the “fox tapeworm,” has been found in wildlife on the West Coast for the first time. Researchers from the University of Washington discovered this parasite in 37 out of 100 sampled coyotes near Puget Sound in Washington State. This information was shared earlier this year in a study published in PLOS Neglected Tropical Diseases.

Though the presence of this parasite in coyotes is concerning, experts emphasize that the risk of infection for the general public remains low. Lead researcher Yasmine Hentati explained that the high infection rate in coyotes is linked to their diet, as they often consume raw rodents.

The genetic testing of these coyotes revealed that they carry a newer and more infectious European variant of the parasite, which has become the dominant strain in both the U.S. and Canada.

A Growing Concern

Historically, the fox tapeworm was rarely seen in North America. Prior to the 2010s, infections were primarily reported in remote areas of Alaska. Over the last 15 years, however, the parasite’s reach has extended, affecting more dogs and humans, particularly across the Midwestern U.S. and Canada.

Dr. Linda Yancey, an infectious disease specialist, highlighted that cases of the tapeworm in coyotes have been increasingly identified west of the upper Midwest in recent years. While some cases exist in Eastern Europe, they are still quite rare in the U.S.

Most human infections are reported in individuals who have traveled to or immigrated from regions like Central and East Asia, the Middle East, and North Africa. According to Dr. Yancey, western China has the highest number of human cases.

Understanding Transmission and Symptoms

The tapeworm spreads among wild animals, primarily canids, cycling between foxes and rodents. People can become infected by accidentally swallowing the parasite’s eggs, often after touching contaminated soil or handling infected pets.

Symptoms can be subtle and might not appear for years. The infection typically leads to the development of fluid-filled sacs called cysts in the liver or other organs. Symptoms like abdominal pain or coughing might only be noticed when these cysts become large enough to cause pressure on surrounding tissues.

Two main forms of the infection exist: cystic echinococcosis, where cysts develop in the liver and lungs, and alveolar echinococcosis, a rarer and more dangerous form that can destroy liver tissue and may even spread to the brain.

Prevention Measures

While the risk to the general public remains low, there are simple precautions everyone can take to minimize exposure. Dr. Yancey emphasizes the importance of good hand hygiene, particularly washing hands before eating and after being outside.

Dog owners should prevent pets from eating wild rodents and ensure routine veterinary care. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) recommends avoiding contact with wild animals that might carry the tapeworm and suggests regular testing and treatment for pets to keep both animals and their owners safe.

In summary, while these health concerns may seem alarming, staying informed and taking basic preventive steps can help manage the risks posed by these infectious diseases.
