MUMBAI, India — Emerging cricket star Vaibhav Sooryavanshi has received his first call-up to the Indian national team. The 15-year-old has been included in the T20 squad for upcoming tours in Ireland and England, as well as the Asian Games.
Sooryavanshi is now the youngest player to be selected for the Indian cricket team. If he gets to play against Ireland on June 26, he will break Sachin Tendulkar’s record, who was 16 when he debuted in Test cricket back in November 1989.
The young opener has been a standout performer in the Indian Premier League this season, leading the run charts with 776 runs from 16 innings and a stunning strike rate of 237.31, including 72 sixes.
Ajit Agarkar, the chief selector, praised Sooryavanshi’s talent, saying, “His performances have forced us to select him. While we are mindful of his young age, we can see his incredible skill set. If given the chance, we believe he can deliver for the national team.”
Having debuted in first-class cricket at just 12 years old, Sooryavanshi became the youngest player to earn an IPL contract when he was signed by Rajasthan Royals for the 2025 season. He shone in that season, scoring 252 runs in just seven matches, including a record 35-ball century.
His impressive journey continued as he played a key role in India’s Under-19 World Cup victory in 2026, scoring an astounding 175 runs in the final match against England, setting a record for the highest score in an ICC tournament final.
Shreyas Iyer has been appointed captain for the matches against Ireland and England, taking over from Suryakumar Yadav, who has been dropped due to recent underperformance.
The Indian team will play two T20 matches in Ireland on June 26 and 28, followed by five T20 games in England next month. The squad for the Asian Games also features star bowler Jasprit Bumrah, as India aims for gold ahead of the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics.
Teams for the tours include:
- Ireland and England: Shreyas Iyer (captain), Abhishek Sharma, Sanju Samson, Ishan Kishan, Shivam Dube, Tilak Varma, Nitish Kumar Reddy, Axar Patel, Washington Sundar, Varun Chakaravarthy, Ravi Bishnoi, Mohammad Siraj, Harshit Rana, Arshdeep Singh, Prince Yadav, Vaibhav Sooryavanshi.
