The FIFA World Cup is a grand showcase where top players shine and aim to leave a mark for their teams. Fans look to these athletes for inspiration and excitement throughout the tournament.

This year, however, several star players will miss out due to injuries that will keep them sidelined for an extended period. While some may return before the new club season kicks off, others won’t be back until later this year.

These absences will certainly be felt during the FIFA World Cup 2026, and here’s a look at some of the injured players and how long they are expected to be out.

RODRYGO

One major star sitting out the tournament is Rodrygo. He played a key role for Brazil in 2022 and was anticipated to be part of the squad this year, despite some struggles with Real Madrid. Unfortunately, he sustained a torn ACL during a match against Getafe in March, ending both his season and World Cup hopes.

Rodrygo is predicted to be out for 8 to 10 months, making a return just before the year ends.

HUGO EKITIKE

Hugo Ekitike had a fantastic start to his career at Liverpool, netting 11 goals in 28 appearances last season, which solidified his place in the French national team for this World Cup. However, he suffered a ruptured Achilles tendon during a Champions League match against PSG and had to undergo surgery, sidelining him for the foreseeable future.

MOHAMMED KUDUS

After a stellar performance in the 2022 World Cup, Mohammed Kudus caught the attention of many and made a move to Tottenham Hotspur. Regrettably, injury struck when he suffered a quadriceps injury in January, and a setback in March has ruled him out of this upcoming World Cup.

FERMIN LOPEZ

Fermin Lopez, along with teammates Gavi and Pedri, was seen as a rising star in Spain’s midfield. He had a strong season with Barcelona, contributing 13 goals and 17 assists in 48 matches. Sadly, he fractured a bone in his foot, requiring surgery that will keep him out of the World Cup, although he should be back in time for the new season.

EDER MILITAO

Eder Militao has long been a reliable defender for both Real Madrid and Brazil. This World Cup was expected to see him continue that role. However, after suffering a very serious hamstring injury, he required surgery that could have significant implications for his career. His absence is a significant loss for Brazil, who are aiming for their sixth World Cup win.

XAVI SIMONS

Xavi Simons faced a rough beginning to his time at Tottenham, but he was expected to shine for the Netherlands in this World Cup. Unfortunately, he tore the ACL in his right knee in April during a match, leading to surgery and a lengthy recovery period that will keep him off the field until later this year.

These players will be sorely missed as teams prepare for the World Cup battles ahead.
