Minnesota Department of Agriculture Supports Soil Health with New Grants

ST. PAUL — This year, the Minnesota Department of Agriculture has awarded 166 grants totaling $4.7 million to farms and watersheds through its Soil Health Financial Assistance Program (SHFAP).

These competitive grants aim to cover half the cost of essential soil health equipment, promoting practices that benefit the environment. Eligible items include no-till drills, air seeders, cover-crop drones, and strip-tillage units. Both new and used gear, as well as individual machine components, can qualify for funding.

Brad Jordahl Redlin, manager of the Ag Conservation Service, highlighted the program’s unique approach, noting that it provides much-needed support for farmers needing specialized equipment to enhance soil health. “This funding is a first-of-its-kind program in the U.S. that directly assists farmers with buying the tools necessary for conservation,” he said.

The program was launched in 2023 to help farmers tackle the high costs of machinery, a challenge made tougher by federal constraints that limit funding for equipment considered for production rather than conservation. Redlin emphasized the importance of community unity in addressing this issue, as various agricultural organizations came together to advocate for a solution.

One of the key features of this program is its flexibility. Grant money can be used for a variety of expenses, including complete rigs or individual parts, allowing applicants to tailor their requests to their specific needs. Redlin mentioned that this approach encourages creativity, asking farmers to explain how their equipment choices will contribute to improving soil health.

This year’s funding has reached farms in 79 counties, with grants ranging from $500 to $45,000. The enthusiasm from the community has been significant, with the program evolving to meet approximately 50% of applications by 2026.

Andy Linder, a farmer from southern Minnesota, recently received funding from SHFAP. After eight years in agriculture and starting a business focusing on cover crops, he wanted to invest in better equipment. “There’s a growing interest in no-till farming in our area, and having a no-till drill will benefit not just my farm but others too,” he shared. He noted that costly machinery can be hard to justify, but grants make investing in such tools more manageable.

Grant applications open in August and are available to individual farmers, producer groups, and local governments. Equipment purchased by government bodies must be accessible for public use. The application requires detailed information about costs and equipment use, with priority given to beginner farmers, certified water quality program participants, and those who haven’t previously received funding.

For more details on eligibility and criteria, potential applicants can refer to the SHFAP guidelines.
