David Dhawan Film Festival: A Celebration of Legacy
The David Dhawan Film Festival is currently taking place at PVR, celebrating the renowned filmmaker. As part of this celebration, a special fireside chat featured David Dhawan discussing his life and career with his son, Varun Dhawan. Coincidentally, both father and son are promoting their upcoming movie, Hai Jawani Toh Ishq Hona Hai, set for release on June 5.
During the event, David spoke candidly about the challenges he faced throughout his career, revealing that some actors hesitated to collaborate with him. He humorously noted, “If a director’s film doesn’t succeed, actors tend to look elsewhere.” This comment drew laughter, especially from Varun, who is an actor himself.
David shared a memorable experience with Govinda, an actor who remained unfazed by commercial success. “When my film didn’t do well, he told me, ‘Just write another script!’ That led to me creating Shola Aur Shabnam,” he recounted fondly.
When Varun inquired about moments of rejection, David explained that while no actor explicitly rejected him, he felt their reluctance. He emphasized the importance of creating strong scripts and memorable songs, stating that these elements allow filmmakers to work with new talent.
Chashme Baddoor, released in 2013, featured Ali Zafar, Divyenndu, and marked the debut of Taapsee Pannu in Hindi cinema. David admitted that he worked on the film out of frustration, recalling that Rishi Kapoor had concerns about his role in it but ultimately agreed to participate.
