Venkatesh Iyer Shines Despite RCB’s Loss to Sunrisers Hyderabad

The head coach of Royal Challengers Bengaluru, Andy Flower, praised Venkatesh Iyer after the team secured a spot in Qualifier 1 of the IPL 2026. Despite losing to Sunrisers Hyderabad by 55 runs, RCB finished in the top two of the points table.

Iyer, who opened the batting, contributed a crucial 44 runs off just 19 balls, hitting four fours and four sixes before being caught out by Eshan Malinga.

Coach Flower highlighted Iyer’s patience and commitment throughout the season. He noted that Iyer has consistently made an impact when given the chance, showing professionalism even while waiting for his turn.

“Venkatesh Iyer has earned my respect,” Flower stated during the post-match press conference. “He has been ready to step up whenever we’ve needed him. His attitude has been phenomenal, always showing a positive outlook while waiting for his chance.”

Flower continued to emphasize Iyer’s hard work, noting that he has been dedicated in practice—improving his batting, bowling, and fielding skills. “He has been nothing short of exemplary,” Flower added.

Venkatesh Iyer’s Performance in IPL 2026

This season has been a strong debut for Iyer with RCB after transferring from Kolkata Knight Riders. RCB acquired him for Rs 7 crore in the recent mini-auction, and he arrived keen to make his mark following a less impressive season with KKR.

Though he didn’t start the season as a regular player, Iyer capitalized on his opportunities. A notable performance came against Punjab Kings, where he scored an unbeaten 73 runs from 40 balls, earning him the Player of the Match award.

In five matches this season, Iyer has accumulated a total of 158 runs, maintaining an average of 79 with an impressive strike rate of 177.52.

As RCB heads into the crucial stages of the tournament, fans and management alike are eager to see how Iyer continues to contribute.
