Mumbai Indians’ Struggles Continue in IPL 2026
Mumbai Indians’ troubles in the IPL 2026 have only deepened following another tough loss, this time against Kolkata Knight Riders. Captain Hardik Pandya didn’t shy away from pointing out that fielding errors have severely impacted the team’s performance, admitting that dropped catches have put Mumbai at a disadvantage throughout the season.
On May 20, in a match held at Eden Gardens, the Mumbai team faced yet another defeat. After claiming only four wins out of 13 games, they now sit near the bottom of the IPL 2026 points table with just eight points, marking their elimination from the playoffs.
In his post-match comments, Hardik Pandya acknowledged that their fielding had not met the standards necessary for success in the league. “Throughout the season, we’ve really struggled with fielding. We’ve dropped so many catches, which is frustrating because it puts us behind,” he said. He emphasized that teams must capitalize on every opportunity to win games, even the smaller ones. “When you miss chances that could change the game, you end up playing catch-up,” he added.
In the recent match, Mumbai posted a below-average score of 147/8. Despite this, there were moments when they could have turned the tide in their favor, but their fielding once again let them down. One notable moment came in the 10th over when a catch off Hardik’s bowling was missed due to confusion between Deepak Chahar and Robin Minz, allowing the ball to drop between them.
Fielding issues have plagued the Mumbai franchise all season, with a standout example being their five dropped catches in a single game against Punjab Kings earlier. This lack of discipline stands in stark contrast to the team’s past, which relied on sharp fielding to dominate.
In comparison, Kolkata exhibited a much-improved fielding performance under their fielding coach, Dishant Yagnik. Their ability to seize opportunities, like Cameron Green’s impressive catch to dismiss Rohit Sharma, highlighted the sharpness lacking in Mumbai’s gameplay. KKR demonstrated solid composure in chasing down the target, led by players Manish Pandey and Rinku Singh.
With only one match left against Rajasthan Royals, Mumbai’s season limps toward a close. As the team reflects on a year filled with inconsistencies and missed chances, they’ll need to address significant challenges heading into IPL 2027.
