Recovery Efforts Continue After Fatal Diving Incident in Maldives
Rescue teams have located the bodies of four Italian divers in a deep underwater cave in the Maldives, several days after they went missing during a dangerous dive, as confirmed by Italy’s Foreign Ministry on Monday.
The divers were found in the most remote part of the cave system in Vaavu Atoll, where they disappeared last Thursday while diving at around 160 feet deep—a significant risk as the safe diving limit in the area is 98 feet.
Maldives government spokesman Ahmed Shaam reported that the bodies were found together in the largest section of the cave, commonly known as “shark cave.”
Recovery operations are set to retrieve two bodies on Tuesday and the other two the following day.
The search was reignited after the unfortunate death of a Maldivian military diver, Mohamed Mahdi, who passed away from decompression sickness while attempting to rescue the trapped divers.
Previously, a fifth Italian diver, a diving instructor, was found dead outside the cave.
A specialized Finnish rescue team utilized advanced closed-circuit rebreather systems, which are designed for longer and deeper dives in difficult underwater environments.
Search efforts faced multiple obstacles, including rough seas and perilous underwater conditions, which delayed progress as crews worked to explore deeper into the cave.
Authorities are continuing to investigate the circumstances that led to the tragic event.
