Magnitude 5.2 Earthquake Strikes Southwest China
BEIJING: A 5.2 magnitude earthquake hit the Guangxi region in southwest China early Monday morning, resulting in the deaths of two individuals and forcing over 7,000 residents in the city of Liuzhou to evacuate. Search and rescue efforts are currently underway as authorities warn of potential transport disruptions.
The earthquake, which struck in the early hours, has led to two confirmed fatalities, with one person still unaccounted for. Four victims were taken to the hospital; fortunately, none are reported to have serious injuries, according to state media outlets CCTV and Xinhua.
In total, thirteen buildings collapsed during the quake, raising concerns among locals and officials alike. Transportation officials are currently assessing railway infrastructure for safety, as they expect some disruptions in services.
Despite the earthquake’s impact, reports indicate that communication systems, power lines, and water and gas supplies in the affected areas are functioning normally. However, authorities continue to keep a close eye on the situation as recovery efforts progress.
