Tragic Boating Accident in Vietnam Claims Lives of Indian Tourists
HANOI, Vietnam — A tragic incident occurred on Saturday when a tourist boat returning from an island trip in southern Vietnam capsized, resulting in the loss of 15 Indian tourists, according to state media.
The speedboat was transporting 32 Indian travelers and four crew members when it overturned approximately 400 meters from Hon May Rut Ngoai Island, located near Phu Quoc, Vietnam’s largest island, as reported by officials.
Witnesses mentioned that other nearby boats quickly rushed to help, pulling passengers from the water until border guards, the navy, and the coast guard arrived on the scene. The rescue efforts were particularly challenging, as many individuals were trapped inside the boat, and the area experienced high waves.
Authorities confirmed that 21 people were successfully rescued, with all deceased individuals recovered and the injured taken to nearby hospitals for treatment.
Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi stated that the tourists were part of an annual meeting for a private mobile phone company. He also noted that personnel from the Indian Embassy were present at the site to assist.
Phu Quoc is a well-known beach destination in the Gulf of Thailand, famous for its stunning white-sand beaches and clear waters, attracting millions of local and international tourists each year. Hon May Rut Island is located about 10 kilometers south of Phu Quoc.
At this time, the cause of the accident remains unclear, and an investigation is currently underway.
