The Mumbai Crime Branch’s Property Cell has made a significant arrest in a high-profile cheating case allegedly involving businessman Nishit Patel. The case revolves around a staggering ₹16.24 crores allegedly swindled from Habiba Jaffrey, the wife of actor Jaaved Jaaferi. The Khar Police Station has registered this case against six individuals, including Mahesh Patil, an Assistant Commissioner with the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC).

The FIR includes charges against Nishit Patel, Mahesh Patil, and others under various sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS).

Authorities say the accused deceived the Jaffrey family by falsely claiming connections with powerful builders and government officials. They convinced the family to invest a large sum in a redevelopment project known as “New Kamalkunj” in Bandra West, assuring them of quick returns and possession of the property. Investigators believe they used forged documents, fake letters, and other deceitful practices to gain the family’s trust.

As the inquiry unfolds, it has been found that the invested money was channeled through several company accounts. During questioning, Nishit Patel reportedly confessed to his role in fabricating documents. Authorities are now exploring if similar schemes targeted other celebrities and high-profile individuals.

In April 2024, Habiba Jaffrey had received a notice from the BMC regarding unpaid property taxes related to her bungalow in Andheri. Around this time, an acquaintance introduced her to Mahesh Patil, who offered to help resolve her tax problems and subsequently suggested the investment that is now under scrutiny.

The investigation is ongoing, as police look into the full extent of the alleged fraud.
