Kohli Celebrates Growth of Women’s Cricket in India

Former Indian cricket captain Virat Kohli recently shared his thoughts on the exciting evolution of women’s cricket in India. He particularly highlighted the contributions of players like Smriti Mandhana and Jemimah Rodrigues, calling them role models for the next generation and praising how they have raised the level of the game during crucial matches.

In a recent episode of the RCB Podcast, Kohli reflected on various topics, including leadership and his journey in cricket. He discussed how he envisions his legacy moving forward, focusing on the impact he wants to have beyond just records and numbers.

His comments come at a pivotal time for Indian cricket, as fresh talent is reshaping T20 batting and women’s cricket enjoys greater visibility with the Women’s Premier League (WPL) gaining traction.

Kohli specifically noted the remarkable skills of Mandhana and Rodrigues. “Smriti has an extraordinary talent and a natural ability to time the ball beautifully. Watching her play in the final was truly special,” he mentioned. He also expressed pride in Rodrigues, emphasizing her mental strength and focus during the tournament. “She seemed completely in her zone, unaffected by the pressure of the match. It was a testament to her resilience,” he added.

A New Perspective on Achievements

As the leading run-scorer for his team this IPL season with 484 runs at an average of 53.77, Kohli emphasizes that his motivations have shifted beyond personal milestones. “I’ve reached a point in my career where my actions are driven by a sense of purpose. Focusing solely on numbers doesn’t bring the same fulfillment anymore. Now, I’m more interested in the positive impact I can have on others,” he shared.

Kohli also reflected on the emotional significance of finally winning the IPL title with the Royal Challengers Bengaluru, a moment he described as one of the highlights of his career. This victory ended years of frustration for the team and strengthened his bond with both the franchise and its dedicated fanbase.

He acknowledged the fearless gameplay of younger cricket players today and the ongoing evolution of T20 cricket, while still emphasizing the lasting importance of technique and discipline in the sport. “The talent among young players is remarkable. They are growing up with an aggressive style of play, which is exciting to see. But the fundamentals of the game remain crucial—technique and balance are still key,” he said.

As the cricketing landscape changes, Kohli’s appreciation for his teammates and the way the sport is evolving shows his commitment to both personal growth and the future of cricket in India.
