US Tightens Blockade on Iran in the Strait of Hormuz Amid Rising Tensions

As tensions in the Middle East escalate, the US has strengthened its blockade of Iran in the strategically vital Strait of Hormuz. White House officials, including press secretary Karoline Leavitt, discussed efforts to extend a ceasefire involving Iran’s regime and emphasized the importance of securing the waterway, a crucial corridor for global oil shipments.

Iran, on the other hand, has claimed that it has stationed small submarines in the Strait, referring to them as “invisible guardians.” This claim comes amidst a backdrop of failed peace talks between Tehran and Washington, suggesting Iran’s desire to assert greater control over the area. However, experts believe that the Iranian submarines, known as Ghadir-class mini-subs, have limited operational capabilities that would hinder their effectiveness against US naval forces.

Rear Admiral Shahram Irani, who leads Iran’s navy, stated that these submarines are meant to enhance their presence in the Gulf. Analysts have pointed out that while these vessels might pose some risks, their restrictions in range and firepower would likely minimize any significant threat to US interests.

Tom Shugart, a former US Navy submarine warfare officer, mentioned that while the Ghadir submarines can operate quietly for brief periods, they lack advanced technology found in more modern submarines. This limitation means they will eventually surface to recharge, making them vulnerable to detection.

The situation remains tense, with the US Navy recently affirming the arrival of an Ohio-class submarine in Gibraltar, highlighting America’s commitment to its allies. The Pentagon has yet to comment on the ongoing developments.

As military tensions continue to rise, the Strait of Hormuz has effectively become a choke point for commercial traffic, with reports of increased Iranian naval activity and attacks on stranded vessels emerging from the ongoing standoff.
