Concerns Surrounding the 2026 World Cup

As excitement builds for the 2026 World Cup, the atmosphere isn’t all sunny. Many fans have mixed feelings about the upcoming event, especially regarding ticket prices, which have soared to an all-time high. Complaints have also surfaced from fans who participated in the ticket lottery, feeling deceived about the seats they received. To add to the frustration, transportation costs for getting to major stadiums are projected to rise to between $80 and $100.

However, if we step back and look at the bigger picture, the World Cup is anticipated to bring significant economic benefits. With hundreds of thousands of fans expected to flock to 16 host cities, the economic impact will be vast. Fans will be spending on flights, hotel stays, food, merchandise, and even online gambling. This influx of visitors is predicted to stimulate various industries and create new job opportunities.

Here are some key statistics that showcase the World Cup’s potential economic impact, shared by the thematic-investing team at Bank of America:

  • $2.3 trillion: This was the revenue generated by the global sports industry in 2025, making it the tenth-largest economy worldwide. It’s projected to climb to $3.7 trillion by 2030.
  • $41 billion: The estimated contribution of the World Cup to global GDP.
  • 800,000: The expected number of jobs to be created, with around 185,000 of those in the U.S.
  • 90 petabytes: The amount of data anticipated to be collected during the tournament, which is 45 times more than what was gathered during the 2022 World Cup.
  • 7%: The predicted share of global internet traffic that will be consumed by the World Cup final on July 19, up from 4-5% during the previous championship match in 2022. Bank of America predicts this will place “unprecedented strain” on internet networks.

In short, while ticket prices are daunting, the economic stakes are incredibly high, and the commerce generated by the event will be remarkable. For those looking to invest, even if attending the games in person is out of reach, buying stocks in companies likely to benefit from this event might be a wise choice.

Bank of America compiled a list of industries poised to profit, including beverages, sportswear, restaurants, broadcasting, social media, and online betting. Goldman Sachs has also identified stocks they recommend as the tournament approaches:

  • Beer Companies: Recommended brands include Anheuser-Busch InBev, Constellation Brands, Molson Coors, Heineken, and Carlsberg.
  • Athletic Clothing Brands: Adidas, which is the official sponsor, is a top pick, along with Puma.
  • Sports Retail: Companies like Academy Sports and Outdoors and Dick’s Sporting Goods are likely to see an uptick.
  • Hotels and Travel: Hyatt, Marriott, and Hilton are among the recommended stocks.

As for which team might take the trophy, Bank of America had the AI tool Microsoft Copilot predict that France will likely win, with Spain as the runner-up. This seems to align with current betting odds. Interestingly, their internal survey of 65 employees highlighted Japan, Norway, and Morocco as teams to watch for potential surprises—though the U.S. did not make the list.

With so much at stake, all eyes will be on the World Cup, both for the thrill of the game and the economic waves it will create.
