Rajasthan’s Bowling Coach Calls for Improvement After Loss to Gujarat Titans

Shane Bond, the bowling coach for Rajasthan Royals (RR), expressed his frustration with the team’s performance after yet another high-scoring loss against the Gujarat Titans on Saturday, May 9. The Royals allowed a staggering 229 runs in the first innings, leading to a 77-run defeat at the Sawai Mansingh Stadium.

This marked the third consecutive game where Rajasthan’s bowlers surrendered over 200 runs, having previously conceded 229, 222, and 226 runs in their last outings. In this match, Jofra Archer faced a tough challenge, bowling an over that extended to 11 balls and giving away 46 runs in just three overs. This defeat also made it the third time the Royals fell short in Jaipur this IPL season.

At the post-match press conference, Bond acknowledged that the team had not played well in familiar conditions. He stressed that the bowlers need to rethink their strategies. “Our decision-making against Gujarat wasn’t good enough,” he stated.

“We just haven’t performed well in conditions we know well. We’ve been outplayed by the opposition,” Bond added, urging his bowlers to adopt a more innovative approach. He pointed out that consistent execution of their plans was missing during the match.

‘Bowlers Need to Adapt’

With batsmen across the IPL becoming increasingly aggressive, Bond emphasized the necessity for bowlers to adapt and think creatively to counter this trend. He mentioned that bowlers should consult analysts to understand the strengths and scoring areas of different batsmen.

“The batters are coming hard at us,” Bond noted, highlighting that bowlers must ask, “What can I do differently?” He stressed the importance of evolving and looking for chances to excel amid the batting frenzy.

Bond remarked that bowlers should explore various techniques, such as adjusting their run-up or bowling angles. “If bowlers continue to approach the game the same way and expect different results, then they need to change their strategy,” he said. He pointed out how batsmen are now utilizing a range of innovative shots, urging bowlers to expand their skill sets as well.

He concluded by saying that while it’s a challenging environment for bowlers, they have the option to either fear it or view it as an opportunity to improve and stand out.

Looking ahead, Rajasthan Royals will take on Delhi Capitals after a week off, with their next match scheduled for May 17.
