D.Y. Chandrachud to Mediate in Kapur Family Dispute

NEW DELHI: D.Y. Chandrachud, former Chief Justice of India, has been appointed to help resolve a significant property dispute involving the late industrialist Sunjay Kapur’s family. The disagreement is between Rani Kapur, Sunjay’s mother, and his wife, Priya Kapur, regarding a family trust linked to an estate valued at approximately ₹30,000 crore.

Both parties have shown a willingness to engage in mediation. The Supreme Court made the decision on Thursday, asking Chandrachud to facilitate talks and find a peaceful resolution. A bench comprising Justices J.B. Pardiwala and Ujjal Bhuyan noted, “This is a family matter. It should be resolved within the family and not turned into public entertainment.”

The court has instructed both Rani and Priya to meet with Chandrachud for this mediation process, stating, “We will wait for an initial report from the mediator before proceeding further.” The case is set to be reviewed again in August.

Earlier, on April 27, the Supreme Court requested a response from Priya and others regarding a lawsuit filed by Rani Kapur. She is seeking to invalidate the family trust, which was established in October 2017. In her petition, Rani claims that the trust was created using “forged, fabricated, and fraudulent” documents. Currently, legal disputes over the estate and its assets are ongoing in the Delhi High Court, and the Supreme Court is also being asked to maintain the status quo on the trust’s properties.
