Business Leaders Focus on Innovation at NZ-Singapore Forum
In an important gathering, business leaders from New Zealand and Singapore received a strong message from their prime ministers: be innovative and proactive in boosting trade amid global uncertainties. This event marked the first NZ-Singapore leaders’ forum, taking place during a brief visit to Singapore by Prime Ministers Christopher Luxon and Lawrence Wong.
The forum resembles similar events held between New Zealand and Australia, highlighting the close ties between New Zealand and Singapore. Over the past 60 years, Singapore has become New Zealand’s closest partner, with the highest number of trade agreements.
While the forum primarily focused on business, both prime ministers participated in the opening session before finalizing the signing of an essential supplies treaty. This agreement, initiated last October when the two leaders met in New Zealand, aims to ensure the secure flow of goods during crises.
As global tensions rise, particularly with events in the Middle East, this treaty seeks to safeguard New Zealand’s energy supply and provide Singapore with food security.
Speaking to the audience of industry leaders, Luxon emphasized that the landscape of international business has shifted, with security becoming a central topic in discussions. He noted the impact of global conflicts on local economies, citing recent events that affected fuel prices and highlighted the reliance on stable supply chains.
Luxon described how nations like New Zealand and Singapore can collaborate to adapt to these changes and reshape the global order. He pointed out that the essential supplies agreement is a prime example of countries supporting each other instead of retreating into isolation.
Encouraging business leaders to think creatively, Luxon said, “We welcome bold and practical ideas that our governments can take seriously.” Wong echoed this sentiment, urging attendees to build connections and share contact information for swift collaboration in the future.
Wong also acknowledged that markets may not return to previous norms, advocating for diversification and greater trade, especially among trusted partners like New Zealand. He called the forum a chance to foster relationships and devise practical solutions that enhance cooperation in this evolving landscape.
As the world faces new challenges, the forum serves as a crucial platform to explore ways to strengthen ties and ensure mutual support between New Zealand and Singapore.
