Study Questions Fish Oil’s Benefits for Brain Health

New research suggests that fish oil, often praised for its brain-boosting properties, may not be as beneficial as people think. The popular supplement, rich in omega-3 fatty acids, is found in various forms including capsules, drinks, and snacks. However, recent findings indicate that it might not be helpful—especially for individuals who have experienced repeated mild head injuries.

Onder Albayram, PhD, a neuroscientist at the Medical University of South Carolina, and a member of the National Trauma Society Committee, shared insights on this discovery. “Fish oil supplements are everywhere, but we still don’t fully understand their long-term effects on the brain,” he noted.

Researchers found that a specific omega-3 fatty acid in fish oil, known as EPA, could actually hinder the brain’s healing process after an injury. Instead of offering protection, prolonged use may make the brain more susceptible.

The study focused on the neurovascular system, which includes the blood vessels supplying the brain with nutrients. The researchers observed that EPA might weaken these vessel walls, making it harder for the brain to recover after an injury. Additionally, higher use of fish oil was linked to an increase in a protein called tau, which is often associated with long-term brain diseases.

Dr. Albayram emphasized that the impact of fish oil varies from person to person. “Our data show that biology is context-dependent. We need to explore how these supplements behave in our bodies over time rather than assuming they work the same for everyone.”

The study primarily involved mice, and while the results provide valuable insights, the researchers warned that human brains are more complex, so outcomes may not directly translate. They also clarified that these findings mainly concern individuals with a history of mild head injuries, not those using fish oil for other health benefits.

These findings were published in the journal Cell Reports and have raised important questions about the use of fish oil as a health supplement.
