Workers’ Memorial Day Reminds Us of Workplace Safety

Oakland — Today, the Department of Industrial Relations (DIR) and the Division of Occupational Safety and Health (Cal/OSHA) come together to remember workers who have tragically lost their lives on the job, as well as those who have suffered injuries or illnesses in the workplace. This annual observance, known as Workers’ Memorial Day, takes place on April 28, marking the anniversary of the Occupational Safety and Health Act, which became law in 1970. It serves as both a moment of remembrance and a reminder of the ongoing need to promote safe working environments for everyone.

In California, a total of 419 workers lost their lives in workplace incidents in 2024, according to the Census of Fatal Occupational Injuries (CFOI). Each loss profoundly affects families and communities statewide.

Governor Gavin Newsom has expressed his condolences through a proclamation honoring Workers’ Memorial Day.

As we reflect on the lives lost, we are reminded of the critical importance of worker safety. Fortunately, the latest CFOI data shows that California has seen improvements in workplace safety over the past two years, with fatalities decreasing by 17% since 2022. The state’s fatality rate remains lower than the national average.

About Cal/OSHA

Cal/OSHA operates within the Department of Industrial Relations to safeguard workers from health and safety risks in nearly all workplaces across California.

All workers, regardless of their immigration status, are protected. Those with inquiries about workplace safety can reach a bilingual Cal/OSHA representative at 833-579-0927, available Monday through Friday from 9:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. Complaints about safety issues can be made confidentially at local Cal/OSHA district offices.

Employers needing help with health and safety programs can contact Cal/OSHA’s Consultation Services Branch at 800-963-9424 or email InfoCons@dir.ca.gov.

Media Contact: Communications@dir.ca.gov, (510) 286-1161

The California Department of Industrial Relations has been committed to protecting and promoting the health, safety, and welfare of over 20 million workers since 1927, ensuring that employers meet state labor laws. DIR is part of the Labor & Workforce Development Agency.
