Deepti Sharma Shines: A Stunning Comeback in T20I

Deepti Sharma faced a tough time recently, going without a wicket in five consecutive T20 matches. With India trailing 3-0 against South Africa, her bowling economy raised concerns, especially with the T20 World Cup around the corner. Ahead of the fourth T20I, head coach Amol Muzumdar shared his worries about her form.

On April 25, however, Deepti turned things around dramatically. The 28-year-old star claimed her first five-wicket haul, showcasing her talent with impressive figures of 5 wickets for just 19 runs, leading India to a 14-run victory at Wanderers Stadium.

Reflecting on her struggles, Deepti admitted she initially felt uncertain about her abilities, even as her teammates had faith in her. She knew she needed to step up, especially in crucial moments. “I didn’t have as much belief in myself, but I was determined to come back strong. If you don’t perform at a critical time, it stays with you,” she shared in a conversation with Jemimah Rodrigues on BCCI Women’s social media.

Making Key Adjustments

Alongside her phenomenal bowling, Deepti also contributed with the bat, scoring a helpful 36 runs off 26 balls, aiding India in setting a target of 185 runs. She revealed that working closely with Harmanpreet Kaur during practice helped her make important adjustments in her bowling technique.

“My goal was to play a significant role that could lead the team to victory. Believing in my hard work, and the corrections I made in the nets with Harry di, played a crucial part in my game,” Deepti noted.

With this achievement, Deepti became just the fourth woman in history to claim a five-wicket haul in all three formats of the game, joining the ranks of legends like Jhulan Goswami, Jenny Gunn, and Ashleigh Gardner. She aims to maintain this momentum as India gears up for the fifth and final T20I against South Africa on April 27 at Willowmoore Park.
