Iran May Utilize Houthis to Disrupt Bab al-Mandeb Strait, Advisor Cautions

Trump Discusses U.S. Oil Demand Amid Iran Tensions

Rep. John James from Michigan spoke about the recent failed negotiations between the U.S. and Iran, emphasizing President Trump’s strategy aimed at enhancing U.S. energy independence. James pointed out that U.S. oil production impacts global energy prices and the Iranian economy significantly.

A senior analyst in Middle Eastern affairs has warned that Iran may respond to a U.S. naval blockade of the Strait of Hormuz by instructing its allies, the Houthis, to disrupt another essential shipping route known as the Bab al-Mandeb. This narrow passage connects the Red Sea to the Gulf of Aden and carries about 12% of the world’s oil shipments. It serves as a crucial trade link between Asia and Europe, making it a possible target for escalating tensions that could upset global energy markets.

Mona Yacoubian, a director at the Middle East Program, said that if the blockade goes ahead, Iran might take steps to prevent Gulf countries from exporting oil as well. She suggested that this could lead to more attacks on Gulf energy infrastructure or the Houthis attempting to blockade the Bab al-Mandeb.

Iran’s political leaders have echoed these concerns, viewing the Bab al-Mandeb as a critical point just like the Strait of Hormuz, especially with the potential blockades being discussed.

U.S. Central Command announced that the blockade will take effect this Monday, affecting vessels of all nations entering or leaving Iranian ports. President Trump stated that the U.S. Navy would block any ships attempting to navigate the Strait of Hormuz.

In light of possible threats from Houthi forces, the U.S. issued a warning about potential attacks on vessels in the Red Sea. The Houthis, who operate mainly in northern Yemen, have been regarded as a significant threat to U.S. interests in the area.

Yacoubian noted that the possible escalation of conflict could extend to the Red Sea, which would worsen existing disruptions in global oil markets. She pointed out that Iran might deploy the Houthis to target Saudi oil shipments if the Strait of Hormuz is blocked.

The Houthis recently participated in Iran’s broader conflict against the U.S. and Israel, launching ballistic missiles toward Israel, although both were intercepted.
