9-Year-Old Boy Rescued After Being Locked in Van for Two Years in France
A 9-year-old boy was discovered in shocking conditions in his father’s utility van in eastern France this week. Local authorities suspect he had been locked inside for nearly two years.
The boy was found on Monday curled up in a fetal position, unable to walk after being confined for so long. A neighbor alerted the police after hearing “sounds of a child” coming from the van in the village of Hagenbach, which is located near the borders of Switzerland and Germany. Prosecutor Nicolas Heitz described the scene, stating the boy was naked, covered with a blanket, and surrounded by trash.
When found, the boy reported he had not bathed since 2024 and was clearly in distress.
His father now faces charges of kidnapping. The father claimed he locked his son in the van to protect him from his partner, who allegedly intended to send the boy to a psychiatric hospital. However, the prosecutor noted that there were no medical records supporting claims of psychiatric issues, and the boy had been performing well in school.
When the boy first went missing, he was said to have transferred to another school, a story that misled family and friends.
The boy’s father’s partner, who denied knowing about the situation, has also been charged with failing to help someone in danger.
Currently, the boy’s two siblings are in the care of social services, and the boy himself has been taken to a hospital for care. He expressed to authorities that he thought his father had no choice but to keep him locked away, citing ongoing conflicts with his father’s partner.
This case has raised numerous concerns about the well-being of children in vulnerable situations, igniting discussions about child protection laws in the region.
