Real Madrid’s Title Hopes Take a Hit After Controversial Draw
Real Madrid’s chances of winning the league took a serious blow with a controversial 1-1 draw against Girona FC at the Bernabeu on Friday. Interim head coach Alvaro Arbeloa expressed his frustration over the officiating, particularly criticizing a late VAR review that denied his team a vital penalty.
This draw leaves Madrid six points behind league leaders FC Barcelona, who also have a game in hand, making their title pursuit more difficult as the season nears its end. Arbeloa didn’t hold back in his post-match comments, highlighting what he sees as inconsistencies in VAR use after an elbow incident involving Kylian Mbappe went unpunished.
“That should have been a penalty, no matter where you are,” Arbeloa stated. “I can’t understand when VAR chooses to intervene; it feels like it’s only used when it suits certain agendas. Today just confirms my feeling that we’ve faced unfair refereeing this season.”
This situation reflects broader concerns in Spanish football. Barcelona’s coach, Hansi Flick, has also voiced his criticism of officiating after recent matches, pointing to missed calls in losses against Girona and Atletico Madrid.
“It’s the same story every game. It’s shocking. You don’t need VAR for that; it’s a clear penalty,” Flick remarked after a similar incident occurred earlier this season.
The ongoing disagreements about refereeing are casting doubt on the standards within La Liga, particularly regarding the use of VAR in key moments. With several prominent coaches speaking out, there’s increasing pressure for officials to provide more consistent decisions as the season reaches its climax.
Real Madrid Misses Out on Important Points
Real Madrid seemed on track for a much-needed victory when Federico Valverde found the net early in the second half. His goal tally since the start of March has been impressive, putting him ahead of players like Raphinha and Donyell Malen. However, Girona equalized just ten minutes later with a strike from Thomas Lemar that beat goalkeeper Andriy Lunin.
Despite the setback, Arbeloa remains hopeful about the title race. “I won’t say we’ve lost the title until it actually happens. Until then, we will keep pushing,” he said.
Next up for Madrid is a crucial UEFA Champions League quarterfinal second leg against Bayern Munich at the Allianz Arena, as they look to keep their European hopes alive.
