Elon Musk’s X Takes Bold Steps to Tackle Engagement Farming with Major Monetization Revamp

X Revamps Revenue Sharing to Promote Quality Content

The social media platform X, led by Elon Musk, is introducing changes to its revenue sharing program. The goal is to reduce the promotion of low-quality content and instead encourage original, high-quality posts that add value to users’ experience.

Nikita Bier, the Head of Product at X, shared the news in a post, explaining, “For this creator payout cycle, we’re trying out new tools to identify the original authors and will allocate a portion of the revenue specifically to them.”

Bier emphasized that while reposts and commentary are important aspects of the platform, the Revenue Sharing program should reward creators for their original work. “This means acknowledging the effort that goes into creating unique content, not just the accounts that share it widely,” he added.

This initiative aims to enhance the user experience on X, making it a more valuable platform overall. Bier noted that the Revenue Sharing program will continue to adapt to motivate creators to share their best content.

X has faced criticism recently for allowing engagement farming, where users post viral content or clickbait to artificially boost their visibility. This practice has affected the payouts for creators on the platform.

Earlier this year, Bier announced that X would no longer count impressions from replies towards monetization payouts to combat ‘reply spam’. Now, the platform will only consider organic views from users’ main timelines.

In a recent twist, a proposed change to the program that would have prioritized impressions from users’ home regions was halted after Musk intervened, stating that it needed further consideration.

Eligibility for X Creator Payout

To qualify for the creator payout on X, users must meet specific criteria:

  • Be a subscriber to X premium or Premium+
  • Have at least 500 followers
  • Generate a minimum of 5 million organic impressions over three months

According to X’s official blog, impressions from verified users are valued more in payout calculations. Additionally, views from Premium+ subscribers carry more weight than those from Basic subscribers.
