Bangladesh’s Foreign Minister Calls Recent India Trip “Very Productive”
New Delhi: Bangladesh’s Foreign Minister, Dr. Khalilur Rahman, recently described his meetings in India as “very productive.” This visit highlights an effort to strengthen the ties between Dhaka and New Delhi. Dr. Rahman was in India from April 7 to 9, 2026, where he met with External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar and other senior officials to discuss important topics such as trade, connectivity, water-sharing, visa services, and energy cooperation. His visit comes after BNP leader Tarique Rahman became Prime Minister in February 2026, following a significant election win.
In an interview, Dr. Rahman emphasized the strong personal connection between Prime Minister Tarique Rahman and Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi. He mentioned that both leaders had exchanged letters and spoken directly, expressing a mutual desire to enhance their countries’ relationship. “It’s a relationship important for both nations, and we’re looking at ways to move forward,” he said, sharing a sense of optimism about future progress.
Dr. Rahman also confirmed that Prime Minister Tarique Rahman plans to visit India, although exact dates have yet to be finalized. His remarks indicate a clear intention to renew and deepen the India-Bangladesh relationship, particularly after challenges faced during the previous administration.
India and Bangladesh enjoy a robust partnership based on shared historical, cultural, and economic ties. Key areas of cooperation include bilateral trade, border management, and river water issues.
In light of the ongoing conflicts in West Asia, Dr. Rahman addressed the pressing energy challenges, noting supply disruptions and rising costs impacting Bangladesh’s economy. He mentioned that India has been supplying fuel to Bangladesh, with further requests made during his visit. The two foreign ministers also met in Mauritius recently during an Indian Ocean conference hosted by India Foundation.
