Sri Lanka Faces Challenges Ahead of Test Series Against India
Sri Lanka is gearing up to kick off a two-Test series against India, but they’ll be missing two key players. Pathum Nissanka and Kusal Mendis have both been ruled out of the first Test, which is set to start in Galle on August 15.
In light of their absence, Sri Lanka has brought back Niroshan Dickwella, who hasn’t played Test cricket in three years. He will step in as wicketkeeper, filling the void left by Mendis, who is sidelined due to a hamstring injury. Nissanka will also miss this match as he continues his recovery.
The team, led by Dhananjaya de Silva, has a mix of experienced and newer faces. Sri Lanka is looking to bounce back after a disappointing 1-0 loss in their recent Test series against the West Indies, where Lahiru Udara stood out as the top scorer.
Nishan Madushka is expected to play a bigger role at the top of the batting order, especially after scoring fifties in a recent practice match against India.
The squad includes veteran Dinesh Chandimal and Kamindu Mendis as vice-captain. The middle order will also feature Pasindu Sooriyabandara and Sonal Dinusha, who will need to step up in the absence of Nissanka and Mendis.

Focus on Spin Options
One of the major points of interest in this series will be Sri Lanka’s spin bowlers and the conditions in Galle, known for producing turn. Prabath Jayasuriya and Ramesh Mendis are set to lead in this department, with Jayasuriya having an impressive record at Galle, boasting 81 wickets in just 11 matches.
Jayashuriya, a left-arm spinner, and Mendis, a right-arm off-spinner, offer a solid spin combination that could put pressure on the Indian batsmen. Dhananjaya, the captain, can also contribute as a right-arm off-spinner, and Kamindu Mendis has the unique ability to bowl both right-hand and left-hand spins.
Keshara Nuwantha, an uncapped spinner, has earned his first Test call-up and could be used as a third specialist spinner if needed. He recently took three wickets in a warm-up match against India.
In terms of pace, Asitha Fernando, Lahiru Kumara, Vishwa Fernando, Milan Rathnayake, and Dilshan Madushanka provide further options for Dhananjaya to consider.
As Sri Lanka prepares for the first Test, they will need to find ways to compensate for the loss of Nissanka and Mendis. Dickwella’s return adds some familiarity behind the stumps, while the spin duo of Jayasuriya and Mendis, backed by various options, will be vital in applying pressure on India in Galle.
India is also facing its share of injuries, with star pacer Jasprit Bumrah unable to participate, along with all-rounder Washington Sundar and No. 3 batter Sai Sudharsan. Sarfaraz Khan has been called up as a replacement for Sudharsan, while fast bowler Auqib Nabi will replace Bumrah.
This upcoming series promises to be full of excitement and challenges for both teams.
