Unexplained Shoulder Pain May Be a Silent Signal of Cancer, Experts Caution

Warning Signs of Unexplained Shoulder Pain

Experts are raising concerns that unexplained shoulder pain may indicate more serious health issues, particularly liver cancer. While shoulder pain usually results from common problems such as rotator cuff injuries, arthritis, or nerve issues, it can also be “referred pain” linked to liver conditions.

According to the American Cancer Society, discomfort in the right shoulder blade can be an early warning sign of liver cancer. In published reports, it has been shown that pain in the shoulder may signal hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC), which is the most common form of liver cancer.

Dr. Mark Ashamalla, a radiation oncologist based in New York, explained how liver tumors can cause pain in the shoulder, even if there are no visible issues with the shoulder itself. The liver is located just below the diaphragm, and if a tumor grows large or irritates this area, it can trigger pain that the brain misinterprets as shoulder discomfort.

“It’s a real symptom, but it doesn’t mean something is wrong with the shoulder joint itself,” Dr. Ashamalla noted.

Understanding Shoulder Pain

Most shoulder pain is due to straightforward causes, such as muscle strains, overuse, or even bad posture. Typically, this kind of pain worsens with specific arm movements and may cause stiffness or tenderness. However, shoulder pain that arises from the liver doesn’t act like typical shoulder trouble.

Dr. Ashamalla highlighted several signs that might indicate the shoulder pain is related to liver issues:

  • Pain on the right side, often near the shoulder blade.
  • Pain not clearly linked to arm movement.
  • Discomfort persists despite normal shoulder assessments.
  • Pain feels dull rather than sharp.
  • Pain continues even with rest or standard care.
  • Accompanied by other symptoms, such as weight loss, fatigue, or a yellowish tone to the skin and eyes.

These signs are important but should not cause immediate panic, as they do not confirm cancer on their own. “It’s crucial to pay attention when the pain doesn’t follow familiar patterns or is accompanied by worrying symptoms,” Dr. Ashamalla emphasized.

Other Liver Cancer Symptoms

One of the tricky aspects of liver cancer is that it often shows no significant early symptoms. According to Dr. Ashamalla, it typically emerges with vague changes that can be easy to dismiss. Some common symptoms to watch for include:

  • Feeling full after eating only small amounts.
  • Unexplained weight loss.
  • Persistent fatigue.
  • Discomfort in the upper abdomen.
  • Abdominal swelling or jaundice.
  • Dark urine or pale stools.

When to See a Doctor

Dr. Ashamalla reminds us not to worry over every ache. Shoulder pain is common and often harmless. However, if it persists without a clear reason or comes with concerning symptoms, it’s important to seek medical advice.

For those already living with liver conditions or who have risk factors for liver cancer, any unexplained symptoms should raise greater concern. Seek medical help if:

  • The pain lasts longer than a few weeks.
  • There’s no clear cause.
  • It doesn’t get better with treatment.
  • It’s present even when the shoulder is at rest.
  • It worsens at night.
  • Other symptoms of liver issues develop.

Stay informed and proactive about your health, and never hesitate to consult a healthcare professional if you have concerns.
