Vance Calls Ukraine Conflict the Toughest Challenge Yet

BUDAPEST: On Wednesday, U.S. Vice President JD Vance criticized European leaders for their lack of action in trying to resolve the ongoing Ukraine conflict, describing it as one of the toughest situations to address.

Ukrainian officials have urged the United States to push Russia to halt its invasion, pointing to a recent ceasefire agreement with Iran as an example of successful American diplomacy.

During his visit to Hungary, Vance expressed disappointment in European political leaders, stating they seem uninterested in finding a solution to this situation. He acknowledged that while there has been “significant progress” in negotiations, resolving this conflict remains a challenge.

“We have written statements from both the Ukrainians and the Russians, and their positions are gradually aligning,” Vance noted. He remains hopeful, saying, “The war has stopped making sense,” indicating a desire for resolution.

However, he emphasized that negotiation requires cooperation from both sides. “What’s happening now is a debate over small pieces of land. Is that worth the loss of so many young lives? Is it worth prolonged economic struggles and soaring energy costs?” he questioned.

Vance also praised Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban for his close relations with Moscow, which sets him apart from many other EU leaders. Orban, who has faced criticism for his stance and for possibly stirring anti-Ukraine sentiment ahead of impending elections, has been pivotal in bridging understanding between Ukraine and Russia, according to Vance.

Vance’s visit to Hungary began on Tuesday, coinciding with Orban’s campaign ahead of parliamentary elections, marking a significant moment in a political landscape marked by challenges to Orban’s long-standing leadership.
