Delhi Capitals Coach Talks About Mitchell Starc’s Absence
Delhi Capitals’ bowling coach, Munaf Patel, recently commented on the team’s performance without star bowler Mitchell Starc. The Capitals have started their season strong, winning their first two matches despite Starc’s injury. He is currently in rehab but plans to join the team later in the tournament.
Starc played a crucial role in Australia’s recent Ashes victory against England, taking 31 wickets and bowling for more than 153 overs. After also participating in the later stages of the Big Bash League with the Sydney Sixers, Cricket Australia is wisely managing his workload, especially with 21 Tests scheduled for the upcoming year.
During a press conference ahead of the upcoming match against Gujarat Titans, Munaf acknowledged that while the team is currently thriving without Starc, his absence might be felt if their performance declines.
“We’re winning, so we don’t feel Starc’s absence right now,” he mentioned. “But if our performance dips in future matches, that could change.”
Munaf highlighted Starc’s talent, calling him one of the best bowlers in the IPL, and drew a comparison with renowned bowler Jasprit Bumrah. He often checks for updates about Starc’s return.
“He’s among the top bowlers globally. Right now, we are not missing him because we’re winning. But he is our top player, and there aren’t many better bowlers in the IPL than Starc. Bumrah is one of the few who can be compared to him, with experience, speed, and ability to swing the ball over 140 kph,” Munaf explained.
Any Updates on Starc’s Return?
Regarding Starc’s potential return to the team, Munaf said there have been no recent updates. The team is relying on information from Cricket Australia’s medical staff.
“At this point, there’s no new information. We will wait for updates from the Australian physio and medical team,” he stated.
In the previous IPL season, Starc took 14 wickets in 11 matches for Delhi Capitals, including a pivotal performance in a Super Over victory against Rajasthan Royals. Overall, he has claimed 65 wickets across 52 matches in his IPL career.
