Pope Leo XIV Delivers First Easter Blessing, Calls for Peace
Pope Leo XIV celebrated his first Easter by delivering a heartfelt message calling for peace and urging the world not to become numb to the violent conflicts that have caused suffering for countless individuals. His Easter blessing, known as the Urbi et Orbi, was given from the balcony of St. Peter’s Basilica to an enthusiastic crowd in St. Peter’s Square, which was reported to exceed 50,000 attendees.
In his address, Leo highlighted the need for hope and peace in a world plagued by wars and injustices. He urged everyone to reject the normalization of violence and indifference toward the deaths that occur daily. “On this day of celebration, let us set aside our desires for power and conflict, and ask the Lord to bring peace to a world torn apart by hatred,” he stated.
The pope emphasized the peaceful nature of Christ’s resurrection, encouraging people to be inspired by this message of love. “Let those who wield weapons lay them down,” he urged, advocating for peace achieved through dialogue rather than domination.
Quoting Pope Francis, Leo reflected on the prevalent “globalization of indifference.” He lamented the daily thirst for death in various conflicts around the globe, aligning his message with the ongoing call for compassion and action.
He concluded the blessing by wishing everyone a happy Easter in ten different languages and singing the Regina Coeli. Earlier in the day, Leo had celebrated Easter Mass, emphasizing the importance of hope in the face of violence and destruction.
As global tensions remain high, particularly regarding the ongoing U.S.-Israeli conflict involving Iran and Russia’s actions in Ukraine, Leo’s call for peace and reconciliation seems more urgent than ever.
