Rassie van der Dussen Retires from International Cricket

Rassie van der Dussen has officially announced his retirement from international cricket, marking the end of his impressive career with South Africa. This decision comes after he was not included in Cricket South Africa’s central contract list, suggesting that his time in international cricket has come to a close.

The 37-year-old’s last game was in the Champions Trophy against New Zealand in Lahore, where he scored 69 runs in a tough chase of 363 runs. Taking to social media, van der Dussen shared his feelings about his journey and expressed gratitude to all who supported him along the way.

In his heartfelt message, he said, “It is with a proud heart and a profound sense of gratitude that I announce my retirement from International Cricket. Wearing the Proteas jersey has been the greatest honor of my life.”

He continued, “This journey has involved years of hard work and sacrifice, but representing South Africa made it all worth it.” He also expressed special thanks to his wife, Lara, for standing by him through both the highs and lows of his career.

Career Highlights

Rassie van der Dussen began his international career in 2018 at the age of 29, making his debut against Zimbabwe. Over the years, he played in all three formats of the game and gained a reputation as a reliable middle-order batter, especially in white-ball cricket.

In Test cricket, van der Dussen played 18 matches, scoring 905 runs with an average of 30.16 and six half-centuries. He faced challenges in securing a long-term place in the Test side, with his final appearance occurring against Australia in December 2022.

His performance in One Day Internationals (ODIs) was particularly impressive. He played 71 matches and scored 2,657 runs at an average of 50.13, including six centuries and 17 fifties. He was a key figure in South Africa’s batting lineup, often stabilizing innings in times of pressure. He also appeared in the ODI World Cups in 2019 and 2023 and even captained the team in one ODI in 2024.

In T20 Internationals, van der Dussen participated in 57 matches, accumulating 1,406 runs at an average of 33.47, along with 10 half-centuries. His ability to blend stability with attacking play made him a valuable player in the shorter format.

Overall, he scored a total of 4,968 runs at the international level, playing a significant role during a time of change for South African cricket. He also briefly played in the IPL for the Rajasthan Royals, although his success there was limited.

While Rassie van der Dussen’s international journey has officially come to an end, he plans to stay connected with the sport through domestic matches and mentoring, concluding a remarkable career that lasted over seven years.
