Rodri Addresses Rumors of Tension with Vinicius Junior Following Ballon d’Or Awards
Manchester City star Rodri has responded to speculation about a fallout with Real Madrid’s Vinicius Junior after Rodri won the 2024 Ballon d’Or, leaving Vinicius as the runner-up.
Speaking to Onda Cero, the Spanish midfielder stated, “I have nothing against Vini Jr. I respect him greatly for his achievements this past year. The decision about the Ballon d’Or is not up to us, and I don’t see us as rivals.”
Earlier, some tensions were evident when Manchester City fans displayed a banner at the Etihad Stadium during a recent match, mocking Vinicius for his decision to skip the Ballon d’Or ceremony.
The two players have faced each other frequently, with both clubs meeting often in the UEFA Champions League. Their latest encounter was in the Round of 16, where Real Madrid emerged victorious once again.
Rodri acknowledged the strength of Real Madrid, saying, “Regardless of their form, Real Madrid is always a tough opponent.”
With his contract at Manchester City nearing its end, there is growing curiosity about his future, especially regarding a possible return to Spain. “Playing at the Bernabeu is an amazing experience. My past with Atletico Madrid won’t stop me from considering a move to Real Madrid. It’s hard to say no to one of the world’s top clubs,” he remarked.
Rodri previously spent a season with Atletico Madrid in 2018/19 before his €70 million transfer to Manchester City. He also noted, “I never imagined playing outside of Spain, but when Manchester City came into the picture in 2019, I couldn’t refuse. I have a year left on my contract, and we’ll have to discuss things soon. Real Madrid remains an option for me,” he concluded.
