Upcoming UFC Fight: Joe Pyfer vs. Israel Adesanya

As Joe Pyfer gets ready to step into the octagon on Saturday, March 28, he knows he will be facing one of the best in the sport, Israel Adesanya. This matchup comes with its own set of jitters, especially when you’re up against a former champion.

Adesanya is not entering this fight at his peak. After reclaiming the middleweight title by defeating Alex Pereira, he’s faced a challenging stretch, losing his last three bouts. These included a decision loss to Sean Strickland, a submission loss to Dricus du Plessis, and a knockout by Nassourdine Imavov. Following this tough period, he took a 14-month break from the octagon, marking the longest pause in his career.

Despite these struggles, Adesanya is still viewed as the favorite going into the fight. He is known for his rapid rise to the top of the middleweight division. Pyfer, who is aware of Adesanya’s past accolades, is determined to treat this fight like any other. “I just have to tweak my tactics a bit. The game plan changes depending on the opponent, but I’m preparing for all five rounds and studying Adesanya’s strengths and styles,” Pyfer shared.

Currently riding a three-fight winning streak and holding a record of 6-1 in the UFC, Pyfer is viewed by many as an emerging contender. While some believe he is on the rise and Adesanya is on the decline at 36 years old, Pyfer disagrees. He feels that the pressure is on Adesanya to perform and is content being labeled as the underdog. “He’s still top-tier. He’s the best in the middleweights. Just because he’s lost recently doesn’t mean he’s not skilled. He was caught in those fights, but he’s still motivated and ready to fight. All the pressure’s on him.”

Embracing a New Mindset

Pyfer has also undergone a personal transformation, shifting from an aggressive persona to a calmer approach. He credits his newfound faith in Jesus Christ for helping him handle the media attention surrounding this fight. “I could let this moment overwhelm me, but I don’t. I realize how big this fight is, but my past experiences have prepared me.”

He believes in relying on his faith and trusting whatever outcome unfolds, focusing more on his performance than the fight’s magnitude. Ranked 14th in the middleweight division, a victory over Adesanya could propel him into the top 10, but he remains focused on simply fighting. “I’m ready to face whoever is in front of me. Right now, that’s Israel. I respect him, but I’m not afraid. My plan is to fight hard.”

Pyfer’s goal is straightforward: to see how far he can go in this sport. “When I started MMA, I wanted to know if I could compete at the highest levels. I feel I’ve shown that I can. This fight is another chance to prove it,” he said. With his eyes set on victory, he believes that the matchup against Adesanya will be a valuable experience no matter the outcome.
