A number of cricket fans are expressing their displeasure towards the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) following some significant changes to the Pakistan Super League (PSL). On March 22, the PCB announced that they would be reducing this year’s PSL from six venues to just two due to the ongoing oil crisis.
In addition to cutting down on the venues, the league will also forgo the opening ceremony and host matches without fans to save money. The current global oil situation is not the only challenge; several players have left the PSL to join the Indian Premier League (IPL), with some signing on as replacements for injured players.
Many fans are finding humor in the situation, playfully calling the PSL the “Petrol Shortage League” for its limited arrangements this year.
This season, the PSL is competing directly with the IPL, which has grown increasingly popular. The PSL couldn’t take place during its usual schedule because of the T20 World Cup 2026. Players like Blessing Muzarabani and Dasun Shanaka have opted out of the PSL in favor of playing in the IPL, where financial rewards tend to be much higher.
These changes emphasize a broader issue beyond mere scheduling and logistics. External factors, like the oil crisis, have impacted the PCB’s ability to conduct the league as planned. Additionally, the movement of players to the IPL highlights the growing financial divide between the two leagues.

PCB head Mohsin Naqvi announced that the board will take legal action against players who leave at the last minute. Following a similar incident last season, when Corbin Bosch was banned for a year for pulling out late, Naqvi emphasized that the board would enforce the rules strictly this time around as well.
