Pope Leo XIV Urges Swift Halt to Hostilities in Iran

Pope Calls for Immediate Ceasefire in Iran Conflict

On Sunday, Pope Leo XIV issued a strong plea for an immediate ceasefire in the ongoing conflict in Iran. Speaking after his noon blessing at the Vatican, the Pope urged leaders involved in the violence to stop fighting and seek dialogue instead.

“On behalf of the Christians of the Middle East and all people of goodwill, I ask those responsible for this conflict to cease fire,” Pope Leo said. “Violence will not lead to the justice, stability, and peace that the people urgently need.”

While he did not specifically mention the United States or Israel, his comments came in light of a recent attack that devastated a school in Iran, resulting in the deaths of over 165 individuals, many of whom were children.

The conflict, which is over a week old, has seen escalating violence, affecting not just military targets but also schools, hospitals, and civilian areas.

U.S. officials have stated that the strike might have been based on outdated information, and an investigation is currently underway. The Pope expressed particular sympathy for the victims’ families and indicated his concern for the growing humanitarian crisis in Lebanon, exacerbated by the conflict.

Christian communities in southern Lebanon have become a focal point for the Vatican, highlighting the importance of their presence in a region mainly inhabited by Muslims.

For the past two weeks, Pope Leo has made general calls for peace while maintaining a neutral stance, consistent with the Vatican’s diplomatic traditions.

However, some Catholic leaders have taken a firmer position. Cardinal Robert McElroy, the archbishop of Washington, called the war morally unjustifiable, while Cardinal Blase Cupich of Chicago criticized the White House for its portrayal of the conflict on social media.

In response to the concerns, Vatican Secretary of State Cardinal Pietro Parolin emphasized that the Holy See is in contact with all parties involved, including the Americans and Israelis, to guide them toward peaceful solutions.

The situation remains tense, and many are hoping for a resolution soon.
