Trump Suggests Iran Sit Out FIFA World Cup 2026 for Safety Concerns

Trump Comments on Iran’s Participation in World Cup Amid Tensions

US President Donald Trump recently expressed mixed feelings about the Iranian men’s national soccer team participating in the upcoming 2026 World Cup. He stated that while the team is welcome to join, he has concerns about their safety. In a post on Truth Social, he emphasized that it might not be wise for them to attend due to their own risk.

The backdrop to these comments includes rising tensions in the region. Iran’s sports minister mentioned that following recent airstrikes by the US alongside Israel, it might not be feasible for Iranian athletes to compete. This escalation has sparked broader conflicts in the area.

The World Cup, set to take place from June 11 to July 19 in the US, Canada, and Mexico, will feature 48 teams, including matches scheduled for Los Angeles and Seattle. Should Iran officially withdraw from the tournament, it would mark a significant event in the history of the tournament, as they would be the first team to do so in the modern era.

Iran was notably absent from a recent FIFA planning summit held in Atlanta for World Cup participants. FIFA has yet to comment on the situation. Notably, Trump was awarded FIFA’s inaugural peace prize late last year, highlighting his ongoing interest in international relations.

In a related development, Australia recently granted humanitarian visas to five Iranian women soccer players who were seeking asylum due to fears of persecution linked to their refusal to sing the national anthem at an Asia Cup match. Trump had reached out to Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese, urging him to support the Iranian women’s team.

The situation remains tense, and the fate of Iran’s participation in the World Cup will continue to unfold as the event approaches.
